Your wallet is the one part of crypto where a mistake is usually permanent. There is no support line that can reverse a bad transaction or recover a lost seed phrase. This hub covers the three things that matter: choosing the right type of wallet for how much you hold, setting it up without leaking the seed phrase, and keeping it safe once real money is in it.
The short version: a software wallet like MetaMask is fine for small amounts and daily DeFi use. Once your balance passes roughly a few thousand dollars, a hardware wallet earns its cost by keeping your private key off any internet connected device. Crypto wallet FAQ
Do I need a hardware wallet?
If you hold more than a few thousand dollars, or you plan to hold for years, yes. A hardware wallet keeps your private key on a device that never connects to the internet, so malware on your computer cannot sign transactions without you physically approving them. For small daily amounts a software wallet is enough.
What happens if I lose my hardware wallet?
Nothing, as long as you still have the seed phrase you wrote down at setup. Buy a new device, enter the seed phrase, and the wallet is restored. The device is replaceable. The seed phrase is not. That is why seed phrase storage is the real security task.
Is MetaMask safe?
MetaMask itself is safe software. Almost every MetaMask loss comes from the user: entering the seed phrase on a fake site, approving a malicious contract, or being socially engineered. Pair it with a hardware wallet for larger balances and review token approvals regularly. Details in Crypto Wallet Security.
Trezor or Ledger?
For most desktop DeFi users, Trezor, because the firmware is fully open source, the privacy track record is cleaner, and Shamir Backup is available. Ledger wins on Bluetooth and mobile use. The full comparison is in the Trezor Safe 7 review.
